Did You Know Telstra Launched a Super Fast HD Mobile Download Speed in Late February?

As you may or may not be aware, but near the start of 2017, Telstra tested and launched the world’s first mobile network that is able to download HD movies and TV shows in a matter of seconds. Say what? Did anyone else miss the memo on this? It seems many of us did.

Testing Phase

Before we get too ahead of ourselves on the matter and make our readers think this service will be available to everyone, it is important to understand that prior to February, theses network capabilities were only tested and shown to be reliable but not necessarily ready for an extremely high volume of users quite yet. While the news of this release was exciting at the time, it was only made available to part of Telstra’s network in selected cities. The rest of Australia will have to wait for the time being.

Telstra, together with Netgear, Ericsson, Qualcomm, successfully tested their LTE mobile capabilities and speed and announced in late January that the service was going to be released to Australian consumers at the end of February, 2017. The question is, did you know you that could now download your favorite TV show in a matter of seconds?

Like many, you’re probably wondering exactly how fast the mobile download speeds are. To illustrate, a one-hour long TV show can be downloaded in less than seconds. Incredibly fast, right? How about having the ability to download a 3GB HD movie in 3 minutes? Telstra began allowing customers access up to 1Gpbs of download speeds and up to 150Mbps of upload speeds over Telstra’s 4G network.

As a comparison, prior to offering these insanely fast speeds, the network only offered a maximum of 100Mbps, which at the time, was at about 10 percent of the network’s capabilities. One of the major reasons it has taken some time to be able to offer these high speeds was largely due to reliability. The capabilities were there but the network needed further testing in order to ensure it was reliable before making promises the network would not be able to deliver to consumers on a consistent basis.

Naturally, media and other industry members were impressed with what Telstra could do and looked forward to the release into Australia’s telco market.

How to Access Fast Download Speeds

Many people may be wondering if they can access their favorite TV show or movie to their handheld device using these high download speeds on their mobile network, and unfortunately not at the moment as this is basically for home use, for the time being anyway. Sine LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution”, the company and the industry does expect to see these capabilities being offered to mobile devices at a later time, but we are not quite there yet.

So, how and where can consumers take advantage of such fast download speeds? Through the use of a Nighthawk M1 device that used one SIM card that has the ability to connect to more than one 4G band. The device is pocket-sized and can connect up to 20 devices to the internet all at the same time. Basically, from wherever Telstra’s network can be accessed, users will be able to access the internet and enjoy super fast download speeds across multiple devices (up to 20 at the same time).

For $360 in upfront costs or through a range of plans, you and the entire family can connect your devices and enjoy unprecedented download speeds. Each family member can now enjoy their favorite TV shows or movies without having to fight over the remove or argue about what to watch.

The Ultimate Goal

One of the main reasons Telstra developed, improved, tested, and launched this service was largely due to the fact that the telco firm wanted to help prepare consumers for what will come in the near future of telco capabilities.

For example, the Telstra’s device management director released the following statement in reference to this, “It’s going help people further embrace a new breed of mobile applications and experiences including immersive virtual reality, connected cloud computing and rich entertainment, and it brings us one step closer to introducing 5G in Australia.”

The downside to all of this is (and was) the real-world experience was definitely going to operate much slower for a variety of reasons.

The Network Today

Fast forward to today (7-8 months after release), the 4G trend has definitely caught the attention of the industry with all other providers in Australia on board—Vodafone being the last to jump on the bandwagon.

The 4G network has been respectively packaged and sold as the 4GX or 4G Plus network and the latest smartphone releases were created with these capabilities in mind so they are ready and fully compatible for when the 4G network expands into more rural locations since a high percentage of smartphone users will have already made the switch to one of the latest releases.

Not much else has changed in terms of service coverage over the past few months as coverage areas are still quite limited and users must be in a designated 4GX coverage area in order to access the services. However, there is still more progress expected to be made in the coming months and years as the demand for faster download and upload speeds will only continue to increase and those not living within major city limits have been chomping at the the bit in order to have access to this service.

The great news for those in the Queensland is that the service is widely available, however, Telstra cannot guarantee that every single area or building will have anything outside or normal network services. Visiting one of the Telstra shops in Melbourne and the surrounding areas to inquire about the available services in your area will help consumers understand what they have access in their coverage area.

Conclusion

It is clear that the release of the 4GX/Plus network changed the market and has it prepared consumers for what will come next. With this in mind, it is also evident that telco in general still isn’t operating at the level industry leaders have hyped up consumers for. Time will only tell where the future of 4G and 5G networks end up, in which case, those of us who are still operating on 3G networks and capabilities will need to continue to remain patient as the more advanced network services we’re all waiting for eventually reach our areas, which is a telltale sign that companies are not ready for the network expansion just yet, but many hope that will soon change.

Top 10 Smartphones of 2017

It’s that time of year again, the smartphone market starts to see the latest models and smartphone versions hit the shelves, or at the very least, we will see them advertised in preparation for a new and upcoming launch. With new versions being released all the time coupled with the amount of different manufacturers, deciding on which phone to buy is not always easy.

The question often is; do I even need to buy the latest smartphone version? Not necessarily, but if you want to be able to use your smartphone model’s latest features, an upgrade is essential. We wanted to help you decide on which model and version to buy, which is why we put this guide together for you. Check out which smartphones Australians loved this year in 2017, along with their features below.

  1. iPhone 8 Plus

The iPhone 8 was released earlier this year and proved to be the smartphone of all smartphones. Why? It mainly won over Australians (and the world) due to its performance and unprecedented battery life. It also has a dual camera system that kind of outdid the Galaxy Note’s camera because of its low-light camera system. However, in the end, the iPhone 8 plus certainly is a larger phone with even better features compared to other models.

Features and Specs:

  • 5 inch screen
  • 2 storage options – 64GB or 256GB
  • Weighs 202 grams
  • Apple A11 Processor
  • Dual 12MP rear camera
  • 7MP front camera
  • Battery – 2,691mAh
  • 1980 X 1080 for screen resolution
  1. Samsung Galaxy S8

The Galaxy S8 was the “it” smartphone right up until iPhone released its eighth generation. In terms of battery life and performance, Samsung’s Galaxy 8 is still up there, but Apple 8 Plus still outdoes Samsung. Samsung has come out with incredible screens, excellent battery life, and powerful performance. Aussies loved this phone, up until Apple’s recent releases. Don’t get us wrong, It’s still a great smartphone, but still lacks where Apple’s iPhone 8 makes up for that lack.

Features and Specs:

  • 8inch screen size
  • One storage option: 64GB
  • 152 grams
  • Exynos 8895 Processor
  • 12MP on the rear cam
  • 8MP on the front cam
  • Battery – 3,000mAh
  • 2960 x 1440 for screen revolution
  1. Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium

Many of this year’s smartphones have impressed the market, and Sony is not an exception to this either. It sits in third position and for good reason. It has a few great features not offered on the bigger smartphone name brands, such as their 960 fps slow motion camera, amazing speed, incredible battery life, and its ability to resist water damage. In comparison to Apple and Samsung’s latest releases, it is a bit on the bulky side, but excellent performance can be found in this phone.

Features and Specs:

  • 5 inch screen
  • One storage option: 64GB
  • 195 grams
  • SnapDragon 835
  • 19MP rear cam
  • 13MP front cam
  • 3,230mAh battery
  • 3840 x 2160 screen resolution
  1. Galaxy Note 8

It’s not surprise to see Samsung on this list again, however, what is surprising is that it’s the Galaxy version. As many faithful Galaxy users know, the Note 7 was a complete disaster but the Galaxy Note 8 has made up for where the Galaxy Note 7 lacked. The Note 8 is a overall great device with some excellent power and excellent battery life, but there’s not much else to report on overall features of this phone, but it’s still a great phone.

Features and Specs:

  • 3 inch screen
  • One storage option: 64 GB
  • 195 grams
  • Octo-Core Exynos 8995
  • Dual 12MP rear cam
  • 8MP Front cam
  • 3,300mAh battery
  • 2960 x 1440 screen resolution
  1. The HTC U11

HTC was once quite popular and now it seems to have risen in popularity once again with the U11. The Galaxy S8 may top it, this phone provides users with similar performance, a unique design, and a much cheaper price tag, making it an economical choice for budget conscious Australians.

Features and Specs:

  • 5 inch screen
  • One storage option: 64GB
  • 169 grams
  • SnapDragon 835 processor
  • 16MP rear cam
  • 12MP front cam
  • 3,000mAh battery
  • 2560 x 1440 screen resolution
  1. iPhone 8

Apple’s iPhone 8 may not be the iPhone 8 Plus, but it’s pretty close. It has a lot of the same features, performance power, and functionality, but still doesn’t quite add up. What made this phone make it on our list was the fact that the the engineers managed to create a phone with less of battery capacity while somehow maintaining a powerful performance. No, it doesn’t have a dual cam, but it is still an overall impressive device.

Features and Specs:

  • 7 inch screen
  • Two storage options: 64GB or 256GB
  • 148 grams
  • Apple A11 Bionic
  • 12MP rear cam
  • 7MP front cam
  • 1,821mAh battery
  • 1334 x 750 screen resolution
  1. OnePlus 5

OnePlus 5 is a new brand that recently launched its phone in Australia for an impressive price of $599. What makes the price so impressive is that the phone is packed full of power, features, and performance to a budget-conscious Aussies who are looking for comparable performance and features without the big name price tag.

Features and Specs:

  • 5 inch screen
  • Two storage options: 64GB and 128GB
  • 153 grams
  • Qualcomm SnapDragon 835 processor
  • 16MP/20MP rear cam
  • 16MP front cam
  • 3,300mAh battery
  • 1920 x 1080 screen resolution
  1. Galaxy S8 Plus

The plus version of the Samsung S8 is almost identical to the smaller version. The main differences are the screen size and the battery life. The extra longevity in the battery life is pretty amazing but that’s about all the plus variant really offers with a price tag few are willing to pay, which is why it’s near the bottom of our list. The screen size is also much larger making the S8 an overall better choice in terms of size, price, batter life, and performance, unless of course you prefer larger phones.

Features and Specs:

  • 2 inch screen
  • One storage option: 64GB
  • 173 grams
  • Octa-core Exynos 8895 processor
  • 12MP rear cam
  • 8MP front cam
  • 3,500mAh
  • 2960 x 1440 screen resolution
  1. Huawei P10

Huawei isn’t a brand that is going away anytime soon and this version comes with an impressive battery life considering its size with excellent performance and features. Consumers looking for a great phone without spending a fortune one one will love the Huawei P10 smartphone.

Features and Specs:

  • 1 inch screen
  • One storage option: 64GB
  • 145 grams
  • Kirin 960 octa-core processor
  • Dual 20/12MP rear cam
  • 8MP front cam
  • 3,200mAh battery
  • 1920 x 1080 screen resolution
  1. The LG G6

LG’s G6 model has an incredible 18:9 display and still has its dual camera from the G5 version. Both the camera and processor alone are worth investing in this phone model, but don’t forget about its water resistance and excellent battery life features either! All round, this is impressive smartphone.

Features and Specs:

  • 7 inch screen
  • One storage option: 32GB
  • 163 grams
  • Qualcomm SnapDragon 821
  • Dual 13MP rear cam
  • 5MP front cam
  • 3,300mAh battery
  • 1440 x 2880 screen resolution

If you want to take the time to check out the features of some of these smartphone models and versions, we encourage you to come into our Telstra shop in Melbourne to view our range of the latest and most popular smartphone models on the market today.

Simple Solutions for Common iPhone Problems

Your iPhone is an indispensable part of your life, humming along while you text, check the weather, snap photos and pay your bills. It works great, until one day when it just doesn’t. Suddenly, your trusty little phone is having battery or connection problems or freezing up. It’s at times like these that you realize how much you rely on your iPhone–and how frustrating it is when it just doesn’t work!

While some problems might need professional help, other issues may be something you can fix yourself with just a few tweaks. Read on to uncover some of the most common issues that crop up with iPhones, along with some of the simplest solutions.

When in Doubt, Restart!

There’s a reason that “Did you reboot it?” is a common refrain of IT help desks everywhere. Restarting your iPhone is the first step to correcting any sort of issue you may be having, whether it’s an app being buggy or problems with battery life, wi-fi connections or more. By turning your phone off, waiting at least 10 seconds and then restarting it, you close out of processes and apps, essentially clearing the slate for your phone.

Battery Problems Are a Real Drain

Rapidly draining power on your iPhone can sometimes mean that a new battery is needed, but they can also be a sign of power-hungry apps. To investigate, check iOS’s battery usage utility to see how your iPhone’s power is being used by different apps. Visit Settings > Battery, where the Battery Usage list will give you the lowdown on which apps are drawing power, both in the last 24 hours and over the last week. If you see that one of your apps has a sky-high battery usage, there is a quick fix. From your Settings, go to General and then Background App Refresh. Locate the app and turn off background refresh for it.

Apps can also drain your battery when you simply have too many of them. Clean up your iPhone by periodically uninstalling apps that you never use, and turn off notifications for seldom-used apps that you wish to keep.

Wi-fi Woes

Connecting to wi-fi is a great way to save on your mobile data. That’s why it’s especially irritating when your phone struggles to make or keep a connection. An easy fix for this common problem is to turn the wi-fi off and then on again. Toggling the connection multiple times may be all it takes to restore connectivity. You can also try forgetting the network, then reconnect and re-enter the password. Finally, you can reset networks settings by going to Settings and choosing General > Reset > Reset network settings.

Bluetooth Not Working

If your phone is not connecting with your car or Bluetooth device, there may be a straightforward solution. Begin by checking to make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone by going to your Control Center and making sure the Bluetooth symbol is highlighted in blue. Assuming it is already enabled both on your phone as well as on your car stereo or Bluetooth device, try toggling it in your phone’s Control Center. Tap the Bluetooth symbol twice to turn it off and then on again. Then restart your iPhone.

You can also try unpairing your iPhone from the device or car stereo, then pairing it up again. Under Settings > Bluetooth, find the device you wish to unpair it from, tap the “i” symbol and then choose Forget This Device. Then restart both your iPhone and your car or device before pairing them back up again.

Freezing Phone

When your iPhone is not responding, the fastest way to get it back in service is to do a force restart. This is different than a normal restart in that you press both the sleep/wake button and the power button together. Hold them while counting to ten until the screen shows the Apple logo, then release them.

Sluggish, Unresponsive Touchscreen

The touchscreen is how you communicate with your iPhone, so it’s all the more frustrating when it slows down or stops responding. The most obvious cause of this problem is the case or covering for your phone. Try removing it and wiping the phone’s screen with a soft, slightly moist, lint-free cloth. If your phone is charging, unplug it. And as always, be sure to try restarting your device.

Overheating Phone

Some iPhone users have noticed that their devices get surprisingly hot to the touch. Assuming that there is not a hardware problem such as physical damage to the phone, this can simply mean that the phone’s CPU, or central processing unit, is revved to the max. Often, you’ll notice your phone getting hot when you’re using it for high-intensity activities such as broadcasting a live video. In that case, simply give your phone a chance to rest and cool off. Close out of all apps by double-tapping the Home button, then swiping all active apps off the screen.

If your iPhone remains hot even when you’re not using it, you can track down the likely source of the problem. Oftentimes it’s one misbehaving app. Check Settings > Battery and Battery usage to see if there is one particular app showing a high usage, then update that app or uninstall it altogether.

Restore Your iPhone

This is the step of last resort for all sorts of problems with your iPhone. If the solutions listed above aren’t working, you can try starting over with your phone by restoring it to factory settings. Begin by backing up your data. Make sure your iPhone is connected to wi-fi, then go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud (for iOS 10.3 or later) or Settings > iCloud (for older versions) and choose the items you’d like to back up. Everything you don’t choose will be gone forever. Scroll down to the Backup button, select it and turn on iCloud Backup, and then Back up now.

After you’ve backed up your phone, go to the Settings menu, choose General, and Reset. This will take you to the reset screen, where you can choose Erase All Content and Settings, then Erase iPhone.

Once your phone has reset, you can either use the iOS Set Up Assistant as though you were starting from scratch, or restore from the iCloud back-up you created.

Conclusion

As you can see, many of the common problems presented by your iPhone have relatively simple solutions. With a few taps and swipes, you can fix many of the annoying issues that crop up from time to time. If you’ve tried some of the fixes listed here and your problems persist, it may be a sign that there are bigger problems with your phone. That’s when it’s time to visit an iPhone repair store https://www.telcoworld.com.au/ near you.

Important Smarphone Features: What You Should Look For

When it comes to modern smartphones, we’re spoiled for options. While some features provide clear advantages, knowing what to prioritize can be difficult. Furthermore, some aspects of smartphones are tradeoffs, and users need to find the right balance. Here are a few tips for comparing smartphones and finding the right one for your needs.

Choosing the Right Screen Size

The most obvious factor that differentiates smartphones is their screen sizes, and it’s a factor that requires considerable thought. For people who regularly use their smartphones for browsing the web and watching videos, large screens have an obvious advantage. Large screens are also great for people who enjoy gaming, and they can make it easier to read text and view images. Large screen sizes tend to be more expensive than phones with small screen sizes, but there are large devices at nearly all price points.

Small screens have some advantages as well, the primary one being that they’re easier to grip. Some people prefer phones that are easy to use with one hand, so if portability is important, try to see how much area your thumb can reach while you’re holding the phone. Small phones are easier to stow away as well, and they’re lighter to hold. When it comes to choosing a screen size, it’s worth spending some time trying out devices in a store. If that’s not an option, ask friends to try out their phones to get a feel for varying screen sizes.

Battery Life

Battery technology has improved dramatically over the years, and modern devices can provide more than a day of operation with mild use. For people who use their smartphones more often, especially those who watch videos and play games, battery life can drop significantly over time. Devices with more battery life tend to be more expensive, but a few extra hours of battery life can be a great investment.

Another feature worth considering is devices with replaceable batteries. Many batteries are simple to replace, letting you refresh your phone in a few seconds by swapping out your batteries. Some devices, including many high-end devices, have sealed batteries that aren’t easy to swap out. Replacement batteries are also great for people who spend time away from electrical outlets. If you’re a fan of camping, for example, it might be worth purchasing a device and a few extra batteries you can charge up before heading out.

Screen Resolution

Today’s smartphones have far higher resolutions compared to early models, and even low-resolution devices provide a clear image. Devices with higher resolutions still have some clear advantages. Video looks even smoother with high-resolution screens, and photographers might notice small differences unnoticeable on lower-resolution phones. Furthermore, higher resolutions provide smoother text rendering, and they can be great for games. If you plan on using your phone as a virtual reality device, a high resolution is essential.

The main drawback of higher resolutions is battery life; higher resolutions have more pixels to render, and these pixels consume more battery power. Furthermore, higher resolutions are more demanding in games, and those looking for high frame rates might prefer devices that run at a slightly lower resolution. Fortunately, even devices with relatively low resolutions still provide better clarity than most laptops and televisions, so consider if a premium high-resolution screen is worth the extra expense.

Navigation Features

Smartphones are great devices for navigation, whether you navigate by car, by bike, or on foot. Today’s devices almost always support robust navigation capabilities, letting you take advantage of both included and third-party navigation apps. However, not all devices connect to the same satellites. GPS support almost always included support for the United States constellation of satellites, but support for GLONASS, Russia’s equivalent, can provide better resolution and faster connections. Galileo, a constellation supported by European nations, can provide better connectivity as well.

GPS connectivity is critical for navigation, but there are other tools that help as well. Integrated compass support helps navigation apps respond more promptly, leading to smoother performance. Accelerometers in smartphones also help pick up on turns more quickly for better interaction. If you’re going to use your smartphone for navigating regularly, especially if you navigate on foot often, it’s worth seeing if these hardware features are supported.

Software Updates

Apple devices have relatively reliable update schedules, so find out how long your Apple device will be supported before making a purchase, especially if you’re picking up a used device. Also note that Apple devices sometimes degrade in terms of performance as updates are released, so it may be worth spending a bit extra for a newer device.

Android devices are a bit more complex, as both manufacturers and plan providers offer varying support timelines. Find out how often security updates will be provided to ensure your device stays safe for as long as you plan on using it. If certain features of a new version of Android seem appealing, consider checking out if support will come to your device.

The Right Interface

Smartphone interfaces can vary dramatically. In fact, Apple’s smartphone interface is at the core of why iPhone fans often stick with Apple devices. The iPhone provides an intuitive design that doesn’t change dramatically between versions. If you haven’t yet purchased a smartphone, make sure you give an iPhone a shot when comparing devices.

Google’s Android interface offers a clean look that’s easy to customize, and its familiarity for users makes it a must-have part of any smartphone they buy. Some manufacturers, however, provide their own takes on the Android interface, including Samsung. When comparing Android phones, take some time to explore custom interfaces to find out if there’s one you prefer to Android’s default interface. While hardware elements are important on smartphones, the interface is what you’ll interact with most of the time.

Worldwide Connectivity

Over the years, smartphones have come to support more and more mobile network infrastructure, and it’s now easier to find devices that work across the planet. However, people who travel to specific regions frequently should investigate if devices they’re comparing work well on the latest mobile infrastructure. LTE connectivity offers far greater connection speeds than other connection types, and some countries deprecate older equipment faster than others. Check out if legacy connections will be available in foreign nations you visit.

Another feature worth considering is dual-SIM support. Phones that support two SIM devices are easier to move between countries, and they allow you to keep your familiar phone interface even while crossing borders. Phones with two SIM slots often provide superior connection options to those with a single SIM slot, but it’s still worth investigating before settling on a single device.

Even people who don’t consider themselves tech-savvy regularly use smartphones. They help us stay connected, and they’re great for relieving stress or boredom while waiting. The right device can serve you well for years to come, but choosing one you aren’t happy with might have you wanting to upgrade in a short period of time. Take your time when comparing devices, and try out devices in person if they’re available at a store. By making a list of priorities and narrowing down devices based on the features you value most highly, you can ensure that your chosen phone is one you’ll enjoy for years to come. Visit your local Samsung Melbourne store to shop around and compare smartphones and their features.

How to Choose the Right Phone and Mobile Internet Plan

Communication is the key to improving our relationships, running a business, and simply staying involved in the world. Choosing a smartphone or home phone that suits your communication style and needs is the first step to staying in touch. The next step is to select a mobile internet and phone plan that is best-suited to the type of communication you need, whether you prefer to text or make calls. There are different considerations to keep in mind when choosing a plan for small businesses, a busy household, and for your personal use. Think about the services you need, the cost, and what kind of features you will use on a regular basis. The most effective way to choose the right plan is to look for one that provides every feature you need without requiring you to pay for things you will not be using.

Home and Business Phones

Although many people grab their mobile when they want to make a call, there is still a significant need for landlines, and not just for when you want to locate your mobile phone by calling it from another number. Every home needs a regular phone for emergencies and if there are younger family members who need access to a phone but who do not yet own a mobile phone. Your business also relies on traditional phones for clarity of communication. Even though the reception from cell phones is often pretty clear, if a customer feels they are being called from an office rather than from someone riding a bus, the experience and sound are more professional. In addition, telemarketing is still an important way to reach new customers and talk to them about your brand or product. Every home and business can benefit from having a high-quality phone plan.

When looking at your options for a regular phone plan, think about how your phone is used and what kinds of calls are made frequently. Do you make many or few long distance or international calls? Do you use the phone heavily on weekends and evenings? Are your calls relatively long or short? Observe the phone usage of the entire family and decide on a plan that will give you deals on the kinds of calls you make the most frequently. Look at the rates per call and per minute. There is likely to be a significant difference in price between calls made to a regular phone and a cell phone. Some calls have a capped maximum amount, which will enable you to talk for hours if you wish while only paying a certain amount of money. However, in many cases, these caps are not available for international calls.

Mobile Plans

There are many different kinds of mobile plans available, so it is useful to do research and think about what kinds of features you need before making your decision. It is a good idea to monitor your mobile usage. Ask yourself how important speed is for accessing the internet. If you rely on your mobile for your work, it may be worth the investment to opt for a plan with high-speed internet, since this plan will literally pay off as you earn more money. On the other hand, speed may simply be a personal preference. Some people value fast internet more than others depending on how you feel about delays.

When you look at different plans available, you may see various prices with a list of features. Take the time to decide which is the best value for money related to your usage. Some plans will offer unlimited evening or weekend usage, advanced texting, and video messaging features. If you prefer audio to video and don’t feel you need unlimited weekends, you may want to opt for the cheaper plan instead of having these features available. On the other hand, if you value convenience and want to be able to calls, texts and video messages when you want to, you may want to invest in a plan that has a slightly higher price tag. In general, you are likely to get more value from higher priced plans, but this matters to you if you will actually depend on these services.

If you travel frequently or prefer to have access over a wide area, consider what kind of reach you want your mobile plan to have. Is it important to you to be able to make calls overseas or have connectivity over a large area? The kind of reach you need for your calls and use of your mobile device can help you decide what kind of plan to get.

Customer service is tremendously important to many mobile users and can make or break a good plan. When you ask questions of the company about their plans, think about the customer service you receive. Are your questions answered promptly and thoroughly? Are the representatives courteous and helpful? Is the service merely adequate, or do the representatives give you information that you have not heard before or let you know about plans that can save you money? Also, think about technical assistance. If your service is facing a problem, you want to get up and running as soon as possible. Make sure that technical assistance is available around the clock and that your service can be restored promptly if there is an interruption.

In addition to speed, access, and customer service, look at special features provided by the plan that make it unique. There may be member plans that provide you with discounts and additional services. As a subscriber to a specific plan, you may have access to discounts from local retailers or for items such as additional mobile devices and other products. Your plan might give you special access to entertainment, such as sports, films, and games. In addition, your network may provide anti-virus and anti-spam features for added security.

Bundle Plans

Bundle plans allow you to pay your bills for different services in one convenient place. You can combine broadband and phone service, for example, in one package. As with many other types of plans, the more diverse services that are offered, the greater the value. Not only can you enjoy the convenience of having multiple services delivered in one package, but can have the flexibility to choose from different combinations of services. The kind of bundle plan you choose depends on what your usage is like. If you live in a household in which children like to stream and download films endlessly on weekends and vacations, a bundle plan that addresses these needs while providing unlimited calls and data may be the best value for your family.

Bundle plans offer flexibility in your telecommunication use. You can access mobile phones affordably from your home phone, and have access to a large number of messages and texts as well as high-quality broadband. Look for plans that have special features such as 3-way chat for convenient communication. Bundle plans are also ideal for businesses or a household with members who use telecommunications differently.

Making the Most of Your Service

Once you have found the right service for your home or business, it is essential to make the most of it. If you are noticing that bills are higher than you expected, it may be because of excess usage rather than problems with the plan. Track your usage and make sure you are not going over the limit. Find out what the data allowance is and how it is measured. You may be surprised at how much you get charged when you exceed the limit. Check with your provider and find out the policies of charging when limits have been exceeded. You may find it useful to use an app that will calculate usage to help you keep tabs on usage and to avoid exceeding certain amounts.

Many people replace regular phone calls with texting and emails or avoid connecting to another Wifi and use their data instead. If this is the case, be prepared for data bills that are a bit on the high side. If you are comfortable with paying extra for the convenience of the internet and having your own data available, this may be an acceptable trade-off. However, you can save money by making calls rather than using the internet sometimes. Try connecting to another network now and again. However, it is important to make sure this network is secure and avoid taking chances on using a public network where others can see your private information. Hackers may gain access to your passwords by using unsecured networks, so use only networks that protect information.

Business Plans

If you run a small business, you know how valuable effective communication is to create a relationship with your customers. One of the things people value most when they choose to do business with a company is clear communication. Whether you are taking orders by text or your employees answer customer service questions by phone, your business needs to make the most of the technology available to make communication clear, helpful and effective. The type of plan you choose for your company depends on its size, the type of communication that is used the most often, your budget and other considerations.
When deciding on a data service plan for your business, it is important to consider the speed of data and the kind of the kind of features you need. For many companies, business can be seasonal. There can be certain times of the year when you do the bulk of your business, and other times that are relatively light. There are a number of business data plans that are flexible and can accommodate these changes. If your requirements are lighter at certain times of the year, you may be able to save money and adjust your plan during these periods.

Missed calls or unanswered texts can cost you customers, and that is why an effective business plan is important. Your company should provide fast internet to its employees, whether they are accessing the web through a tablet, smartphone or a laptop. Your employees may have different working styles, and it is a good idea to give them the options and flexibility they need. Some employees prefer making calls to texting, whereas others prefer phone communication. Your customers are likely to be as diverse in their communication preferences as your employees, so that is why it is important that you have all of your communication options covered in a comprehensive business plan.

You may have a business that involves communicating with employees on the go. This applies to a wide variety of businesses, whether you are a taxi dispatcher or a partner at a law firm. Relying on employees to have their own internet may seem cost effective at first glance, but it can be risky. You can lose business if communication suddenly fails with one of your employees who is out and about. In addition, you want to make sharing your company’s data convenient for staff members who are out of the office. Look for a data sharing plan that allows your employees to connect anywhere and share data with other employees. Create a company-wide data pool that allows anyone employed by the company to share data securely and effectively.

Bring your own device, known as BYOD, is a working style that is gaining in popularity. In the old days, employees would sit down to company-owned computers. With the widespread nature of mobile devices, it is more convenient to allow employees to bring their own devices to work and to connect to the same network. You can find a company that offers special plans for BYOD businesses and a low monthly rate. Make sure everyone in your company has access to the internet and company data with a BYOD plan.

Finding the Right Service

There are many phone and mobile service packages to choose from, so do research on the plans and evaluate your phone and internet use thoroughly before making a decision. Look for business plans that provide internet to your employees whether they bring their own devices or use company computers. For home use, analyze phone and internet use among all members of the household and think about what plan is best for everyone. Unlimited plans eliminate the need to constantly keep track of how many calls are made or how much data is being used. These unlimited plans may seem to carry a higher price tag, but they can represent significant value. You can also check out your local Telstra shops in Melbourne to compare plans and pricing.

Haven’t Upgraded to a Smartphone Yet? Why it’s Time to Make the Switch

Although smartphones are popular, not everyone has made the switch, and many people still use traditional flip phones and other mobile devices. Those who still aren’t using smartphones, however, are missing out, and rapid smartphone development means they stand to miss out even more. Learning how to use a smartphone is becoming increasingly important in many fields, including business and education. By making the upgrade, you can ensure that you stay on top of these important developments. Here are a few of the things smartphones can do besides making calls and a few reasons why it’s time to make the jump.

Navigation

GPS systems are ubiquitous on smartphones, and these tools help you locate where you are with a few simple taps. If you’re a fan of hiking or spending time outdoors, smartphones can serve as valuable safety tools, ensuring you can find your way if you become lost. Drivers can also take advantage of GPS navigation tools to spend less time looking at maps or searching for road signs and more time focusing on the road and staying safe. Bicyclists can similarly use navigational aids to avoid getting lost or distracted while en route.

Mapping programs also help you determine the best way to arrive at your location, and interactive maps help you find out how long it will take to arrive at a destination. Load up a map while on the bus, train, or airplane to find out how close you are to your destination and to look for upcoming landmarks. If you’re traveling in areas where internet connectivity isn’t available, several programs also offer map downloads, letting you take full advantage of your GPS capabilities while in remote locations.

These navigation tools are especially useful for travelers. When you arrive at an unfamiliar destination, you can quickly locate nearby restaurants and other important locations. Find the best way to get to your hotel when you arrive at a transportation terminal, and consider using taxi-like services to book a ride to your destination in seconds. Getting lost in an unfamiliar city can be unnerving, but navigation capabilities ensure you feel safe.

Stay in Touch

Although flip phones and other older phones enable voice calling and text messaging, they provide a more limited interface. Emoji, both included on smartphones and via third-party apps, are ubiquitous in text messaging, and those without smartphones risk missing out. Furthermore, smartphones provide virtual keyboards that make entering messages quick and easy. Smartphones even provide voice-to-text functionality, letting you compose messages without using the on-screen keyboard. For times when your eyes are otherwise occupied, you can have your phone read your messages to you using text-to-voice functions. Hands-free calling and answering also provides convenience by letting you avoid manually navigating through your contacts directory.

Smartphones are also great tools for taking advantage of social media. Log on to Facebook to keep up to date with your friends and family members, and use the platform’s search functionality to meet up with people you’ve lost contact with in the past. To keep up with news and online trends, consider making a Twitter account to browse information when you have a free moment. Tumblr, Pinterest, and other popular platforms also provide robust apps, making them easy to load when you don’t have access to your desktop or laptop.

You can also use internet-based phone programs that save your minutes or let you communicate internationally without looking up country-based phone rates. These systems can provide high-fidelity communication across long distances, and some programs even offer video chatting capabilities. While voice communication is great for keeping in touch, being able to see the face of the person you’re talking with can make you feel even closer.

Better Productivity at Work

Communication is key to nearly all jobs, and smartphones offer an unprecedented way of staying on top of your communication. Voice-to-text voicemail lets you read messages without listening through your inbox, saving you time. Smartphones also provide sophisticated apps for multi-party voice communication, letting you interact with conference calls without having to use a third-party service. You can even disable certain calls during certain hours, letting you turn off incoming business calls when you’re finished for the day.

Email runs many industries, and your smartphone allows you to keep up with email at all times. Search for past messages to locate information, and set up work folders to keep your inbox better organized. Virtual keyboards let you send responses quickly, helping you stay on top of communication even if you’re away from home or the office. For writing longer emails, consider using a Bluetooth keyboard, which offers the convenience of desktops and laptops.

Increasingly, businesses are turning to cloud-based providers. These platforms ease intra-office communication, and they allow for better collaboration. Many of these platforms use browser-based interfaces, making them easy to access using any device with modern browser support. When you have a smartphone, you can use these platforms, letting you access information and get work done regardless of your location. Make sure you’re able to keep up with the modern office by arming yourself with a smartphone.

Stay Entertained

Almost everyone has some down time, and smartphones provide convenient access to virtually limitless entertainment options. If you’re a fan of reading, your smartphone can serve as an e-reader, letting you read through a large library without having to carry around books. Use browsers to access news and entertainment, or load sports apps to keep up with recent scores and to catch some video highlights.

Smartphones are also great for those who love television, movies, and the burgeoning field of online video. Transform your time on public transit into a time for relaxing by using popular video streaming services and headphones, or find channels that cater to your interests on YouTube. You can even sync your smartphone to your television, letting you watch videos on your home monitor or television using an adapter cable or by sending information across your network. Some services even let you save videos for offline playback, making long treks through remote areas a bit more entertaining.

Even if you don’t think of yourself as a gamer, you might find games on your smartphone to be a great way to unwind. If you’re a fan of solitaire, explore the many solitaire apps to play a game when you don’t have space available. Most board games, including chess and other traditional games, have many apps to choose from, letting you play against a virtual opponent. You can even play against human opponents, letting you enjoy a game against a friend or against others from around the world. Don’t be afraid to try out modern smartphone games as well; you might be surprised at what you like.

Photography and Video

Smartphones come with high-quality cameras built in, and these cameras ensure you can always take a photograph when you want. If you come across a particularly beautiful sunset, for example, having a smartphone ensures you’re able to capture it forever. Smartphones also let you capture text-based content with a few taps, ensuring you can make an impromptu copy of important documents if needed. If you’re out shopping and want to ask a contact about a particular product, snap a picture and send it.

Photography is an art, and having a smartphone lets you try out your artistic side. Thanks to their internal memory, smartphones let you take hundreds or thousands of pictures without having to purchase new film. Sync your favorite photos to your computer or to online services to preserve them, and consider trying out online photo-sharing sites to share your photographs with friends or with the world. Even if you own a high-quality camera, having a camera with you at all times is tremendously convenient.

You aren’t limited to static images with smartphones, as modern devices feature robust video capabilities as well. Document important events permanently by loading your video app, and enjoy the small size of smartphones, which makes them easy to point and shoot for extended periods of time. Use the front-facing camera on your smartphone to shoot a video blog, or purchase a simple tripod for steady shots. Specialized apps even provide even more versatility. Use time-lapse photography to capture lengthy weather events and other phenomena.

Smart Homes

Smartphones function as powerful devices on their own, but they can also work in conjunction with other devices to do even more. Home automation is becoming popular, and for good reason: Automation helps you save on electricity, and it gives you the peace of mind of knowing you’re always in contact with your home. Turn off the lights when you’re away from home using your smartphone by installing smart wiring, or control the heating and cooling to ensure you’re not using your system when it’s not needed.

Home security systems often provide smart interfaces as well, giving you instant alerts if your security system sends out a warning. Modern systems often let you access cameras in real time, letting you check on your children when you’re away. You can even lock or unlock your doors remotely; check your camera if someone rings your doorbell and unlock your door if you recognize who it is.

In addition to providing real-time interaction, smart home systems often let you configure them using a smartphone app. Set your heating and cooling schedule using your smartphone, or set your cooling system to kick in at a particular time to keep your home comfortable when you arrive from work. You can even schedule your coffee maker to turn on at a specific time, ensuring you have a fresh pot ready when you wake up.

Continued Learning

While many people focus on the entertainment and communication aspects of smartphones, they’re also great tools for learning. Download tutorial programs to learn new information or skills, or use flashcard-based programs to make memorizing information simple. Download instructional manuals to make your smartphone a valuable reference tool, and use domain-specific applications to search for and retrieve information instantly.

Online educational opportunities are also making it easier to use smartphones to learn than ever before. Video lectures, for example, can replicate the in-class experience and let you view information when it’s most convenient for you. Rewind if you’re having trouble understanding a particular part of the lecture, or set the playback speed to a higher setting to quickly review lectures while studying. Online schools often offer forums and other internet-based tools to help students study, and smartphones give you access to these portals.

Insight doesn’t always strike when you’re on a computer or have access to a pen and paper. When you have a smartphone, you can always jot down a note. Use the microphone to create a voice memo, or even create a quick video if visual information is important. Audio recording also helps you create notes when talking with someone, and many instructors let their students take audio recordings of their lectures, so students don’t have to take thorough notes while listening.

Exploring Virtual Reality

Virtual reality has captured a lot of attention lately, and for good reason: Technology is finally arriving and making the 80s vision of virtual reality possible. However, standalone virtual reality devices are expensive and require powerful computers to function. Because smartphones offer such high resolutions, they can provide an immersive experience by attaching a simple headset with appropriate lenses. These devices are fairly cheap and are easy to set up. The 3D effects these tools provide can give you a compelling sense of movement, and they provide methods of visualization not possible with standard monitors and smartphone screens.

Smartphones can also provide augmented reality. These programs use the phone’s camera to view images and augment them with other information. When touring a new area, augmented reality lets you know the names of buildings and other landmarks as you explore. Furthermore, augmented reality can create new types of games, and they can augment your workout to make it more engaging while tracking how far you’ve traveled.

While virtual reality is still new, it’s found its way into many fields. Filmmakers are exploring ways of making their movies more engrossing, and game developers are using it to provide a unique experience. Educational entities are particularly interested in what virtual reality has to offer, as the interactive nature of virtual reality can make information easier to learn and more exciting. When you have a virtual reality-capable smartphone, you can stay at the forefront of these developments and enjoy finding out how companies are using this new technology.

Enjoy Web Programs

Increasingly, companies are moving their software online. While using a graphical design program or office software used to entail installing a standalone program, users today can use any modern browser to access powerful tools. Although much of the focus on these programs has been on desktops and laptops, smartphones offer the same functionality, letting users run these programs while on the go. By upgrading your flip phone to a smartphone, you can take advantage of these programs.

In addition to offering powerful features, online programs also let you store information on the provider’s servers, so you can retrieve it on all of your devices. Even if you plan to do most of your work on a laptop or desktop, being able to retrieve and modify this information using your smartphone provides unprecedented convenience.

Your smartphone isn’t limited to its screen size and input methods. Using wireless technology, you can connect a keyboard and mouse. Furthermore, there are various methods of attaching your smartphone to a television screen or computer monitor. Because of this, you can take full advantage of web programs. If you travel frequently, web programs might allow you to leave your laptop at home and simply bring along a few portable tools to transform your hotel television set into a powerful workstation.

Smartphones represent a significant change from older mobile phone technologies, and some people are reluctant to move past devices that have served them so well in the past. However, the power and convenience of smartphones make them valuable devices for everyone, and it’s becoming increasingly important to know how to use a smartphone to keep up at work or school. Fortunately, smartphones are designed to be easy to use, and the transition from flip phones to smartphones isn’t as frightening as many imagine. With so many models available, there has never been a better time to make the switch. Visit one of your local Telstra Shops in Melbourne today.

Making the Most of Your Smartphone: Uses You May Have Not Considered

Smartphones are versatile devices. Whether you use an iPhone or are a member of the Android camp, chances are your smartphone plays a role in your life on a daily basis. However, many people don’t realize just how powerful their smartphones are, and many don’t take time to explore all that their devices can do. While they’re great for making phone calls and sending text messages, smartphones provide valuable creative tools and can let you spend your free time more productively. Here are a few of the ways you can do more with your smartphone.

Organizational Tool

Some people are naturals when it comes to staying organized, and others have tried and true systems for ensuring they stay on task and don’t miss important deadlines. Most of us, however, could afford to be a bit better in terms of organization. Instead of trying out a paper-based system or using one that’s tied to a desktop or laptop, take a look at organizational tools available on smartphones. For some, simple checklist tools are sufficient. For others, more comprehensive tools are a better option. Regardless of what you choose, smartphone apps are convenient since most people have their phones with them at all times. Anytime you need to change your schedule, your phone will likely be at hand.

Memorization

Learning something new can be tremendously rewarding, and many people enjoy reading books to learn long after they’re left school. Smartphones are opening new avenues of learning. Whether you’re learning a foreign language, new technology, or nearly any other subject, memorization will probably play a key role. Online flash card programs provide a powerful way to study subjects and learn topics any time you have a few free minutes. Interactive tools can automatically reload cards you’re struggling with and spend less time on cards you’ve already memorized well. Many apps also let you use flashcards other users have uploaded, making it easy to study new subjects. Explore what subjects are available to make your idle time more productive.

Connect Your Home

Because smartphones have become ubiquitous, some devices now use smartphones as control interfaces. Home alarm systems, for example, often provide smartphone interfaces, letting you turn your system on or off or respond to alerts. Home automation is taking off, and smartphones let you control your home lighting and other electronics while you’re away. Control your heating or cooling using your smartphone; if you’re arriving home from work early, tell your smart air conditioning system to begin cooling your home before you arrive. You can even upgrade your home doorbell system and install a two-way communication system that lets you talk to guests when they ring your doorbell.

High-Quality Photography

While no smartphone camera can match professional-grade cameras, modern smartphones can take pictures at high resolutions and capture fine details. Although selfies and other images are fun to take, smartphones also let you explore the more artistic side of photography and give you a great tool for getting started. Both first- and third-party photography tools offer editing features, letting you try out HDR photography and modify your images without having to turn on a traditional computer. When you become an expert at smartphone photography, you can ensure that you’re always able to take pictures when the mood strikes.

Reading

Smartphone web browsers let people access news and entertainment anywhere a mobile internet connection is available. However, many people don’t take advantage of digital versions of books, which let you carry around an extensive library anywhere you go. By storing these books on your phone, you can access them even when you don’t have internet access, letting you read while riding a bus, taking a train, or even flying. Mobile reading apps can also save your progress, allowing you to resume reading right away, and bookmark tools let you access your favorite passages with a few taps. A number of large publishers provide online storefronts, which let you access and download books while on your smartphone or computer. These tools often let you sync your downloads as well, so you can read on your tablet while at home and your smartphone while away.

Traditional Games

Are you a fan of chess, checkers, or backgammon? Your smartphone can serve as a worthy opponent, helping you pass the time while improving your skills. Thanks to the processing power of modern smartphones, you can face off against a world-class digital opponent or dial down the difficulty for a more even challenge. Some programs, including popular backgammon programs, can measure your play and give you suggestions for when you play against human opponents. Other programs let you play live games against human opponents online, letting you enjoy the fun of matching up against a human wherever you are. Many programs even offer tutorial modes, letting you learn games in an interactive manner instead of having to decipher rules in text form.

Graphical Design

The earliest smartphones often had relatively low resolutions and somewhat imprecise touchscreens. Today’s devices, on the other hand, often feature resolutions higher than desktops and laptops and let you enjoy precise inputs. If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at drawing, smartphones give you everything you need to get started. Furthermore, smartphones can also serve as excellent tools for manipulating photographs, enabling you to crop images, apply filters, and even edit elements with a few taps. For more demanding work, you can also attach a Bluetooth mouse or writing pad, letting you perform desktop-caliber work no matter where you are.

Video

Nearly all smartphones have video capabilities, letting you shoot high-quality pictures anywhere. Capable of shooting at high frame rates, today’s smartphones provide smooth and detailed video with the press of a button. Although smartphones can’t match the quality of profession cameras, entire films have been shot with iPhones and other devices, and proper lighting can yield surprising quality in a compact package. Thanks to online distribution, it’s never been easier to share your video with the world. If you’re interested in video blogs and similar types of video, your smartphone provides ample editing capabilities to reach your target audience, and learning how to make the most of smartphone’s video capabilities lets you capture once-in-a-lifetime moments even without a standard video camera.

Communication

It’s easy to forget the primary purpose of smartphones: to make phone calls. However, in addition to standard phone calls, smartphones provide an array of communication tools. Text messages have become popular, and those who haven’t tried them out yet might enjoy the more casual style of communication they provide. Social media communication tools let you interact with friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms, and voice communication tools can help you save on international calling rates. Modern smartphones also let you try out video chatting, letting you see friends and family members while communicating, which is especially great when you or loved ones are overseas.

Writing

Whether you write for work or for pleasure, your smartphones can serve as a valuable tool. Although virtual keyboards can work for short writing, you can also attach a Bluetooth keyboard for writing longer documents. Choose between full-sized wireless keyboards for all the convenience of desktop writing, or use a portable design to save space. Although smartphone screens are small, modern devices provide high resolutions, letting you read back what you’ve typed and edit your documents. In addition to saving files on your device, you can also use cloud-based tools that make your documents easy to access on your laptop or desktop once you’re back at home or work.

Smartphones are great for staying in touch, and being able to access your email and run web browsers helps you feel connected anywhere internet connectivity is available. However, smartphones are far more capable than many people realize, and taking a bit of time to explore apps and find out how to take advantages of everything your smartphone has to offer can help you explore new venues and make the most of your free time. Whether you want to explore new creative venues or if you just want to make day-to-day life a bit more convenient, your current smartphone is probably far more capable than your realize.

A Battle of Giants: Comparing The iPhone 7 Plus And Galaxy S8

Samsung and Apple remain in close competition year after year. They each release new phones according to a predictable schedule. With each new release, we often see new features, design trends, and tools built into the phones. Whether you’re a fan of the iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy, there’s no denying that this competition has fueled some of the greatest innovations in the history of mobile phones.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 7 Plus are currently the two giants in the smartphone market. The S8 is slightly newer than the 7 Plus, but both are still at the cutting edge of mobile technology. It’s impossible to say that one is truly better than the other in all aspects. Each of these phones has different benefits and flaws that it brings to the table. Following is a closer look at each phone and what it has to offer.

Samsung Makes Up For The Note 7

Most Samsung fans are aware of the Note 7 debacle. Even more so if they were unfortunate enough to purchase one of these phones. What first appeared to be a stunning and capable phone, the Note 7 soon became a safety hazard. Samsung initiated a recall of the device after reports of the battery overheating and starting fires.

There was an attempt to remedy the problem with batteries from a new source, but the problem continued. Finally, Samsung was forced to recall and discontinue production of the Note 7 worldwide during October of 2016. It was an unfortunate incident, but it did lead to some positive changes at Samsung. Changes that benefited the production of the Galaxy S8.

For example, batteries now go through an extensive 8 step inspection phase. This has led to increased battery life as well as energy utilization. They are determined to prevent the incident from repeating itself.

Samsung did all they could to make the S8 stand out so that they would be forgiven for the previous Note 7. This resulted in a phone with incredible performance capabilities, wireless charging features, and high levels of water resistance. It may very well be enough to help fans forget about the past.

The Galaxy S8 Introduces The Infinity Display

In terms of appearance, the Galaxy S8 has set the bar incredibly high. As you might expect from this new generation of smartphones, it looks sophisticated, sleek, and incredibly modern. The most noticeable design feature is the screen itself.

Samsung wanted to find a way a way to increase the size of the screen without increasing the overall size of the phone. What they ended up with is known as the “infinity display.” The infinity screen attempts to utilize as much as the front of the phone as possible for screen space. There are no buttons and very little bezel. The edges of the screen even curve back slightly on the edge of the phone.

It was an innovative design choice and one that paid off. The phone is around 1 centimeter shorter than the iPhone 7 Plus, yet the screen is a full third of an inch larger. They managed to successfully capitalize on space to increase screen size without enlarging the phone. It’s highly likely we will see this design trend continue in the future.

Who Is The S8 Meant For?

Every phone has an ideal audience, even if it wasn’t intended to be that way. The features of the S8 will attract those who want the best looking phone in the market. If you are the type who likes to pull out the latest phone and show it to your friends, then you will love this new Galaxy device.

The fast speed and performance also make it ideal for people who do a lot with their phone. For example, if you’re running a variety of apps for work while keeping up with stocks and checking your Facebook, then you’ll love the speed this device offers.

The people at Samsung claim the device is perfect for those who love mobile gaming and watching videos. Unfortunately, this may not be the case. The curved screen looks great, but it can cause some slight interference with your gaming experience. It’s nothing to worry about if you’re a casual gamer, but if you’re the competitive type who likes climbing leaderboards, then the S8 may slow you down.

Overall, the S8 is a great phone. Most critics claim that it’s the best phone of 2017. But what about the iPhone 7 Plus? Technically it was released in 2016, but it’s still one of the best phones available in 2017. Let’s consider some of its features.

The 7 Plus Improves A Great Phone.

While the iPhone 7 Plus didn’t make any revolutionary design changes like the infinity display, it did manage to improve on an already great phone. If you have used and liked the iPhone 7, then you’re going to like the 7 Plus even more. It’s just that simple.

One of the first things you notice about this phone is its size. There’s a reason that it is often referred to as a “phablet.” It’s big, and it has a large screen. It’s not a phone you can comfortably operate with one hand. However, that’s not necessarily a flaw. The iPhone has a way of owning its size and making it look good.

There were a few small design changes in comparison to the iPhone 7 model. The bump for the camera is slightly larger, the antenna bands curve, and it comes in new colors not available for the older model. You’ll also need to get used to no longer having the 3.5mm headphone jack. This is a change you can expect with all iPhones in the future.

The Two Biggest Changes

There are two significant changes Apple has made with the 7 Plus. The first change is that they’ve completely removed the traditional “click down” home button. The button was replaced with a more modern capacitive button. This is a design trend we are seeing in more and more phones, so it only makes sense that Apple finally decided to take the plunge.

The new button works the same way as a touchscreen button would work. Apple utilizes internal rumble feedback to make it feel as though you’ve pressed a physical button.

Overall, this seems like a small change, but it makes a significant difference. Apple has had some problems with the button in the past. It was possible for debris to work its way in there and interfere with the mechanical button. That’s no longer a problem.

The other significant change is the improvement in its water resistance. The new 7 plus has a water resistance rating of IP67. IP67 means that the phone is completely protected from dust and that it can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S8 has a water resistance of IP68.

Who Is The iPhone 7 Plus For?

The 7 Plus isn’t heavily targeted at a single group of people. It is great for gaming, for streaming video, and for working. If you are already a fan of the Apple line of smartphones and tablets, then you’ll undoubtedly love this new edition.

However, if you already have the iPhone 7, don’t feel obligated to spend all of your money upgrading to this new model. There are a few great changes, but not necessarily enough to warrant the cost of upgrading. On the other hand, if you’re using an iPhone 6 or older model, then this is the perfect time for an upgrade.

Choosing Your Phone

If you’re interested in owning one of the latest and greatest phones on the market, then you’ll find yourself choosing between the two options covered above. Both of these phones are fast, they look great, they have large screens, and come with a hefty price tag.

Those of you interested purely in aesthetics will likely prefer the Galaxy S8. Those who are more interested in HD gaming and video streaming will prefer the iPhone 7 Plus. Most Common Android Problems And How To Fix Them

There’s no denying the fact that Android is a great operating system. But as great as it is, it’s not perfect. There are still multiple problems that you could face when running on Android. Luckily for you, though, not all these problems are unfixable. In fact, most of them can be fixed easily.

While there is no doubt that Android offers the most stability, reliability, and malware protection among any smartphone operating system, there are going to be times when you face problems.

But, Android is one of the leading smartphone OS’ in the world, and it would be a crime if you stayed away from one just because you were worried about problems. While there are tons of problems which you may face while using Android, there are also easy solutions on offer for each of the problems. We are going to take a look at a few of them here.

Before you get irritated and throw your Android device in the trash or head to the service center, there are a few things you could try on your own to fix most problems on your Android device. Who wants to go through the extra pain and effort of visiting a service center when you can fix it yourself, right? So give this article a read before you give up all hope and start thinking Android is the worst operating system in the world. It is not the end of the world yet, and hopefully, after reading this article, you will agree too.

There are just a few steps you need to follow in order to keep your smartphone in excellent running condition. Here are some of the problems you may face on your Android device along with easy fixes for each of them:

Google Play Store Crash

If your Google Play Store crashes once you launch it, you may just be dealing with a corrupt cache. Usually, a simple ‘clear cache’ will fix this problem. You can follow the below steps on most Android devices today:

– Go to settings > apps > the “all” tab
– Then find Google Play Store and select “wipe cache & data”
– Restart your phone, and you’re done.

If this doesn’t work then perhaps you should also consider wiping the cache for the below services:

– Google Play Services
– Google Services Framework

Don’t forget to restart your phone after both wipes.

Insufficient space

The Android OS allocates fixed storage space for each of its apps. Users are not able to expand this. So, you may just get this error even if your device shows that there is a ton of storage capacity remaining.

The easiest way of freeing up space on your device is by uninstalling the apps you don’t use. But, if you’re using music apps such as Spotify, you may find it difficult to locate exactly where they are being stored. The easiest way to free up space is with the help of a cleaner app like CCleaner. If you are trying to get a visual display of where all of your memory is being consumed, you could consider using DiskUsage. It will visually display all the locations and sizes of your files for easy viewing.

Not downloading apps

There are times when the Google Play store doesn’t let you install or download apps. There are a couple of very popular fixes for this problem. The first one involves wiping the cache for Google Play. The second is to simply erase its history.

Wiping the cache seems to be the best fix for this problem. Here’s how you do it:

– Go to settings > apps > the “all” tab
– Then find Google Play Store and select “wipe cache & data”
– Restart your phone, and you’re done.

You can also give the wiping history option a shot if you want:

– Go to the Play Store > Settings > Selection “Clear History”

Reinstalling Google Play Store

There is no way you are going to be able to uninstall the Google Play Store unless you have root access. This is not something a normal Android user will know about. So while most people think they’ve deleted Play Store, what they’ve actually done is just disabled it. There are many tutorials on the internet which can teach you how to enable it. A simple Google search will suffice here. Nonetheless, here are the steps:

– Go to Settings > Apps and then swipe right till you find the “disabled” tab.
– Find Google Play Store
– Click on “Reenable.”

Installing Google Play

If you get your hands on an imported tablet or smartphone, chances are it won’t have Google Play. Users will have to find an APK from third party sources if they want to install it on their devices. Before getting started, they will have to enable third party sources. Here’s how:

– Go to Settings > Security > Check the “Unknown Sources” box
– Once this is done, you will be able to install the store.

There are videos detailing this process on the internet as well. You can look at them if you want to make the process easier.

Older version of Play Store

Sometimes, the latest version of the Google Play Store might not work on your smartphone or tablet. In such cases, you could try installing older versions instead. You can find links for APK downloads of just about every major Play Store version on the internet. Just download one of them and use the above steps to install a compatible one instead.

Freeing up memory on Android

This is most probably RAM that you’re referring to. The Android OS works best when there are minimal applications installed. This is because there are some apps which run in the background even though you aren’t actually using them. The more the number of apps you have installed, the more the chances of some of them running in the background and eating up RAM. The easiest way of fixing this is by uninstalling all the apps you don’t use.

You shouldn’t consider using app killers as they can negatively impact the way many of your apps function. RAM boosters are just as bad. At first glance, they may seem like the most useful tool ever, but on closer inspection, you will notice that they’re actually harming your phone.

System UI unresponsive

Sometimes, the UI (User Interface) may stop working. If you can’t fix this issue with a simple restart, then you should try wiping the cache for the System UI. Here are the steps to get that done:

– Go to settings > apps > swipe to the “All” tab and choose “System UI”
– Wipe the cache.
– Restart your device.

Downloads aren’t working

There are times when downloads may just fail. Android has a dedicated download manager to take care of this, and sometimes its cache may get corrupted. In such cases, all you need to do is wipe it. Here’s how:

– Go to Settings > Apps > and then swipe to the “all” tab and choose “Download Manager.”
– Wipe the cache.
– Restart your device.

Can’t locate downloads

By default, Android stores all of your downloaded files in a folder labeled “Download.” In order to find this directory, the first thing you need to do is install one of the many file managers you find on the app store. Once you have installed one, go the “SD Card/Download” folder, and you should see a list of all the files you have downloaded till date.

Can’t play downloaded videos

You can start by trying to use the MX player or VLC player. They are capable of playing just about any file you can think of. Sometimes, videos which are in proprietary formats won’t play though. There isn’t a solution for such issues apart from installing the video player which supports the proprietary format.

Accidentally installed malware

You should never install cracked apps or games onto your Android device. In most cases, it will come with malware. But if your phone already has malware, all you need to do is uninstall the app it came with. If you aren’t sure which app it is that is wreaking havoc on your smartphone, try using a malware scanner. Lookout is one of the best Malware scanners out there and should easily be able to find the untrustworthy app. It is lightweight, free, and great at what it does.

Internet not working

One of the main causes of your mobile internet not working is having poorly configured APN settings. If you are using prepaid plans for internet access, chances are you will need to set up an APN before you can use mobile data. If the settings aren’t configured properly, you will need to set them manually. If you have signed up for an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) which leases spectrum, you will have to configure the APN settings of your phone as well.

Can’t connect to WiFi

The chances are your router is to blame in this instance. There are a whole lot of problems that you could be facing with your WiFi router and the easiest solution at times is to simply restart your phone and your router. If this doesn’t work, troubleshooting the router is your best bet.

Breaking Android password

If you have set a password on your Android device and subsequently forgotten it, you are going to need to perform a factory reset using the bootloader. The bootloader is a preboot environment which lets you restore your operating system to the way it was when you got the phone. There are multiple tutorials on breaking Android passwords offered on the internet too, but you shouldn’t count on them.

The first thing you will have to do is get into the bootloader. The method will vary depending on the type of phone you use. For most phones, you can access it by powering the device down completely. Once you power off the device, hold down your volume down and power button to boot the device. Once you are inside the bootloader, you can easily factory reset the device.

Just remember not to try this if you have a custom ROM. It will render the device unbootable.

Android crashes on boot

If your phone isn’t booting, you can use “safe mode” to recover your device. Safe mode will let you disable all your startup apps, one of which will be the one crashing your phone. Once you have booted in safe mode, you can remove the app which is misbehaving. If you are not being able to start your phone, this is one way you may just be able to.

Android device doesn’t come on

The first thing you should do is try to take out the battery. If the battery cannot be removed, hold the power button down for 15 seconds. If this fails, plug the device into power and then hold it down for 15 seconds. If this fails as well, you will need to go to a service center.

There is only one way of turning your phone on, and that is with the power button. If that doesn’t work, you are fresh out of options.

Android doesn’t read microSD card

This happens on many occasions. Formatting the SD card is the easiest solution here. But, this solves only a part of the issue with SD cards. If you haven’t tried this solution yet, give it a shot:

– Go to settings > storage > choose “Format SD card.”
– Select “Format SD card” again from the list of options.

If this doesn’t work, you will have to connect the SD card with a card reader to recover your data. If your files can’t be read even after you connect it to a PC, you will need to use one of the data recovery software available today. There are many effective software available for free. Just pick up any one of them.

Can’t connect Android to Windows PC

There are a couple of ways in which Android devices can connect with a computer. ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is one of them, and the other is MTP (Media Transfer Protocol). ADB allows users to interact with the operating system of Android while MTP just lets you access specially designated storage directories. ADB causes the maximum amount of problems. But, it is quite useful when it comes to sending commands to the Android device from a PC. For beginners, there are many guides on the internet that will help them learn how to use ADB.

If nothing else is working and you have run out of ideas and suggestions, the last resort is to perform a factory reset. This is the Android equivalent of a nuclear option. Here’s how it’s done:

– Go to settings > “Backup & Reset”
– Choose reset from the bottom of this window

Conclusion

Android is supposed to be one of the most robust operating systems in the world right now. As compared to Windows, it is more or less immune to any sort of malicious software. Don’t misunderstand though as it still has a ton of malware for you to watch out for. It is also very easy to recover from almost any software fault as you would have noticed above.

All you really need to do is press a few buttons, and your problems will be solved. It doesn’t get easier than that, does it? So if you were wondering whether you should buy an Android phone or if you are facing trouble with your Android phone, the tips and suggestions provided here should satisfy any problems/doubts that you may have. However, if you still find yourself scratching your head, bring your phone to a Samsung Melbourne dealer near you.

Most Common Causes of Broken Phones

It’s sometimes hard to imagine life before smartphones. They provide us with communication and entertainment, and they’re increasingly finding use as work devices; people often feel lost when they lose their phone or if it stops working correctly. However, smartphones are small and have many vulnerable parts, and it’s common for components to eventually break. While repairing a phone is difficult, it’s often possible with the right knowledge and tools. Here are a few of the most common ways smartphones break, what you can do to avoid problems, and how you can get your phone back up and running.

Cracked Screens

It’s every smartphone owner’s nightmare: a cracked screen. Today’s smartphone screens are far more durable than those of the past, and many can survive moderate falls unscathed. If the phone strikes the ground at just the right angle, however, cracks can quickly propagate across the screen, making your phone difficult to use and potentially making the screen unusable. External phones cases can provide a bit of protection, although none are able to fully prevent cracks. Practicing good habits can help as well, as avoiding high-risk scenarios can help prevent falls in the first place. However, people use phones so frequently that drops can seem all but inevitable.

Fortunately, the frequency of cracked screens means there are plenty of replacement screens on the market, and experts can replace screens in a fairly short period of time. While replacement screens are easier to find for popular phones models, even uncommon phones typically have replacement options available. Replacement screens aren’t always cheap, but restoring your favorite phone’s screen is far more economical than buying a new device.

Water Damage

Increasingly, manufacturers are offering phones designed to withstand water damage. Through tight manufacturing protocols and plugs for ports, manufacturers can create phones that can handle being submerged for extended periods of time. Surprisingly, even phones not listed as water-resistant can often survive submersion if they’re dried off in a timely manner. Unfortunately, prolonged submersion can cause damage to most smartphones, even some that are rated as resistant. Attentiveness is the best way to avoid water damage; check your pockets before hopping into a pool.

The problem with water damage comes from the electronic components within the phone itself. It’s best to leave your device unplugged and turned off for an extended period of time before powering it on again to avoid short-circuits that can destroy internal components. Some people recommend placing your phone in a bag of rice if it’s been damaged by water, but rice won’t decrease the drying time and can cause problems through dust. If your phone still won’t power on even after it’s been dried, have it inspected by an expert, as some electronic problems are easy to fix. Unfortunately, a damaged motherboard or other component can lead to expensive repairs, and replacement parts might simply be unavoidable.

Damaged Charging Port

Phones are only useful if they have power, but charging ports can become damaged. Because charging ports are frequently connected and disconnected through daily use, mechanical damage is always possible. Furthermore, the electricity that travels through charger ports is greater than many people imagine, and short circuits or other electrical problems can lead to permanent damage. Accidentally kicking a port’s cable can lead to physical damage as well. Be careful when connecting and disconnecting cables, and try to avoid hitting cables when moving.

Because charging ports aren’t integrated within the motherboard itself, it’s often possible to desolder them and solder in a replacement port, although availability varies based on the device, with more popular devices having more options available. Furthermore, it’s important to rely on expert help, as a misconnected wire can cause damage to other parts of the phone, potentially rendering it unfixable. It’s also critical to ensure the port is appropriately secured in place to prevent further damage in the future.

Scratched Screens

One of the areas where smartphones have advanced significantly is in their screens. Today’s screens are far harder than those on older smartphones, and they’re less likely to become scratched. Still, contact with materials harder than the screen itself can lead to unsightly scratches, and some of the materials that can cause damage are surprising. Metal, for example, is softer than the glass on smartphone screens; no matter how sharp a metal knife is, it can’t scratch a screen, so don’t worry about keys damaging a phone. Sand, on the other hand, is often harder than glass, so be careful when wiping away sand to avoid creating scratches. Ceramic materials and diamonds are potential sources of damage as well, and they don’t require much force to cause scratches.

There are a number of purported fixes for scratched smartphone screens, and some companies provide commercial solutions. The complex nature of modern screens, however, means results from these solutions can be mixed. Fixing a scratch involves removing a thin layer of glass to create a smooth surface, so these remedies won’t work on deep scratches. Remember that you always have the option of having the screen replaced by an expert.

Faulty Speaker

While smartphones typically fulfill a number of roles, nearly everyone uses their smartphone for at least one purpose: phone calls. However, smartphone speakers, both those used for phone calls and those used to play music or other sounds, are vulnerable, and water, electrical problems, and other issues can render them unusable. Apps that attempt to raise the volume level of speakers can potentially lead to blown speakers, so stick to headphones or exterior speakers for loud listening.

Fortunately, there are replacement speakers available for many popular smartphones, so it’s often possible to get your phone back up and running without purchasing a new one. Again, it’s important to rely on expert help, as even the act of opening your phone can lead to damage that’s impossible to repair. Wiring is also critical, as a crossed wire can damage your new speakers or cause interference within the phone.

Damaged Exterior

Phones are designed to withstand regular use, but some are more durable than others. The materials used can also dictate what damage the phone is vulnerable to. A glass exterior, for example, will be great at avoiding scratches but may be vulnerable to cracks. Metal is tough, but it can become dented. Plastic tends to be one of the toughest materials, but it can become scratched or even chipped.

Remember that all phones are vulnerable to damage even if they’re marketed as rugged. One of the greatest uses of cases is preventing damage to a phone’s exterior, so determine if preserving your phone’s look is more important than avoiding the bulk of a case. Unfortunately, replacement exteriors for phones can be hard to find and difficult to use, but adding a case to a damaged phone can restore its structural integrity.

Damaged Operating System

Smartphones are computers, and they rely on complex operating systems to run. While major operating systems are thoroughly tested malware and data corruption can cause a phone to become unusable. Keep your data backed up, as a corrupt operating system can make it impossible to access. Be especially careful when updating your phone’s software, as power losses and resets can leave the phone in an inoperable state.

Phones vary, but it’s sometimes possible to reflash the operating system with the right tools, essentially performing a factory reset. Doing so, however, will cause you to lose your phone’s data, so it’s often worth talking with an expert to find out if there are other ways to restore functionality. In some cases, you might even be able to replace your phone’s built-in storage, which can be a smart choice if it’s become damaged.

Smartphones are powerful devices, but they’re also complex, and the failure of nearly any component can make your phone unusable. Phones are typically designed to be small, not easy to service, and replacing items often involves removing strong glue and soldering parts into place. While repairs are difficult, they’re often doable with the right expertise and experience. Before writing a phone off as permanently broken, make sure to talk with an expert to find out if it can be repaired.
